Do you know the feeling of spinning? When I (Lib here) was little I used to twirl and spin around until I got so dizzy I couldn’t stand up straight anymore. Back then, I kinda liked that off-center feeling, now not so much. I don’t physically twirl anymore, but mentally I still spin, y’all.
It’s so easy for me to get going on something about my kids, work, the list I’m not supposed to have, or how i’m doing financially, you get the point.
This is why we are so passionate about Practicing the Pause. No matter how dizzy you feel from your own life busting-at-the-seams, we promise this can help:
Take a break. It may just be pushing back from the table or your desk or telling someone you’ll call them right back, or you need a quick bathroom break. Find a way to get a minute to yourself.
It’s that easy. You just need about a minute and your breath. You can close your eyes or keep them open, but just focus on your breath for a minute. In and out. Feel the way the current of your mind wants to pull you back out into the future or spit you up on the shore of the past. Simply stay steady, breathing, and aware that your breath is always there connecting you to the center of who you are.
Once you’ve steadied yourself, ask what your next right move is. You might not have tons of leeway about what you have to do (hello, deadlines and schedules!), but you do get to choose your attitude. Which is so much more pleasant than spinning and being dizzy!
